Start with the full sectional footprint

Use the manufacturer’s actual width, depth and chaise or return dimensions. Record whether the sectional is left-facing, right-facing or configurable, because that orientation changes how it occupies the room.

Do not rely on the number of seats or a showroom photograph as a substitute for the real footprint.

Place the footprint in the intended position

Mark the sectional on a room sketch or with removable tape where practical. Check doors, windows, radiators, storage access and the routes people use most often.

A sectional that physically fits between two boundaries can still create poor usable fit if one projecting section narrows the only practical route through the room.

A room outline labels three wall segments, a door opening and an uncertain dimension to recheck.

Check the chaise or return separately

The projecting end often determines whether the layout works. Trace the route around that part of the sofa and check whether it blocks a doorway, coffee table position, chair or access to another zone.

If changing the orientation solves the problem, size may not be the main issue.

Compare the sectional with a standard sofa layout

If you are replacing separate seating, compare the new sectional with the furniture it would replace. Note the seating gained, the floor area consolidated and any route or flexibility lost.

A larger continuous piece may simplify one part of the room while making future rearrangement harder.

Include the room in use

Check how people sit down, stand up, reach nearby tables and move around the sofa. Include recliners, movable headrests or other mechanisms if the model uses them.

The sofa-fit guide can help distinguish a size problem from a placement problem.

Check delivery before ordering

Find out how the sectional is packaged and whether it arrives as separate modules. Measure the relevant doors, stairs, lifts and turns using the supplier’s delivery information.

Use the sofa delivery guide when access is uncertain.

Decide what evidence would make the purchase safe to make

Before ordering, resolve every dimension that could reverse the decision. If one doorway, turn or room gap is still uncertain, confirm it rather than treating an approximate measurement as sufficient.

The broader furniture-fit guide separates delivery fit, physical fit and usable fit.
